Wired or Wireless Mouse
After choosing the type of mouse to buy (standard, for gaming, or travel), you need to understand if a wired mouse or a wireless mouse is better for you.
In principle, wired mice are more precise and responsive than wireless mice, but it must be said that the gap between these two types of mice has narrowed in recent times.
Probably for gaming, wired mice are more suitable (unless you want to invest large sums for the purchase of a high precision wireless mouse), while for everyday work, wireless ones are more comfortable. Travel mice must, by definition, be wireless.
Another essential thing to know is that wireless mice can be based on Bluetooth technology or 2.4GHz wireless technology.
The main difference between these two types of mice is that Bluetooth mice do not require the use of external receivers and work with all devices that include Bluetooth, while 2.4GHz wireless-based mice need a USB receiver to function ( therefore they occupy a USB port of the PC or device to which they connect).
Number of Keys
Mice also differ in the number of keys they are equipped with. The keys that are never lacking: right-click, left-click and scroll wheel, but often there are also two side keys with variable functions.
Mice with more than three keys can have programmable keys, i.e., keys to which the user can assign specific functions using special software installed on the PC. Many mice allow you to associate macros, that is, the entire operations to be performed in sequence with a specified key.
In principle, we can say that for everyday use, five keys are more than enough, while on gaming mice, additional keys to customize can be convenient.
Resolution (DPI)
The resolution of a mouse is a value that indicates the number of pixels the pointer moves on the PC screen for every inch of movement made by the mouse on the desktop. A mouse with a resolution of 1600 DPI, therefore, moves 1600 pixels on the PC screen for every inch traveled on the desk.
Mouse resolution is expressed in DPI (dots per inch). Manufacturers rely heavily on this value, but be careful because it is not a parameter that directly indicates the mouse’s level of precision. Also, many mice allow you to adjust the number of PPE to be used by pressing a button or via software.
In short: unless you have a display with an exaggeratedly high resolution, do not focus too much on the number of DPI of the mouse to buy. Instead, check its real degree of accuracy by reading the reviews online and informing you about the quality of its sensor.
Optical or Laser Sensor
We just talked about it. The sensor of a mouse is the component that has the most significant influence on its precision and efficiency. It can be optical (LED) or laser.
Optical sensor mice are very precise and fast, but they give problems on too smooth surfaces and glass. Laser mice do not provide questions on too flat surfaces.
They can also work on glass (it depends on the type of laser used) and are generally more precise than optical ones, but they are also more susceptible to dust. Make your choice based on your preferences and the reviews you find online.
